Volume three, The Laird Returns, concludes Veronica Bale's gripping debut Highland Loyalties trilogy.
Tensions rise in the Highlands as the Scots fight for their independence from English tyranny. But amidst the chaos, Robbie MacGillivray and Jane Sewell are able to carve out a sliver of happiness for themselves, however brief and intermittent their time together may be. The odds are against them he is the dispossessed chief of Clan Gillivray; she is the young, English wife of his enemy, Lord Reginald D’Aubrey, Baron of Dunloch.
Those odds will eventually topple their precariously balanced happiness. Infuriated by the MacGillivray chief’s royal pardon, Lord Reginald will stop at nothing to bring the chief of Clan Gillivray to his death. Caught in the middle of the conflict, Jane must decide, once and for all, where her loyalties lie – with her English King, Edward the Longshanks, or with her love, her Highlander?
And what will she do when the true laird of Dunloch returns?
The Laird Returns Highland Loyalties Trilogy edition by Veronica Bale Literature Fiction eBooks
This is a masterful conclusion to the Highland Trilogy. It is a wonderful story of two young people that fate brought together under very strange circumstances, but fate also seemed determined d to keep them apart. All of the characters, both good and evil, were well-formed and intriguing - Lord Reginald, Ruth, Hobbs, Margaret, and Nuala - but, I particularly cared about the two main characters Lady Jane and the young Scottish Laird, Robbie. I fell in love with them in Volume One and lived every moment of the story with them through all three volumes. I had to know the end of their story.
This final volume, in particular, kept me wanting more, page-by-page, until the very end. My guess is that it will do the same for anyone who enjoys historical fiction and great love stories.
Start with Volume I, then II, and finally III. I guarantee after you read the first volume, you will have to read the next two; and I promise you will enjoy all of them

The Laird Returns Highland Loyalties Trilogy edition by Veronica Bale Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
I really enjoyed the last book in this series. Like the previous two it was filled with real life trials and tribulations and not just the words of a love story. Unexpected betrayal, love, death, and sacrifice fill the pages of Jane & Robbie's life. Hard to put down and it keeping you on the edge if your seat for what comes next, I would recommend reading all three books in the Highland Loyalties Trilogy.
Not a bad storyline but the writer didn't flesh out the characters or the period and obviously didn't do her research, which often showed. I don't think they used the word "okay" in that period. Just because the heroine was the lady of the castle didn't mean that she would wear satin and silk every day. She had work to do like everyone else. I find it hard to admire a heroine who would deliberately have an affair and a child with her lover after he had married another. I like a book that takes me to that time period and engages me enough so that I can see the period through the eyes of the characters. This book could have taken place at any time and frankly, was just boring. I flipped through the pages simply because I had bought it.
I like that the author got right into the story and gave me exactly what I want in a romance...the sense of anxiety juxtaposed with the pull of desire, wrapped in a compelling story that made me want to keep reading. There are plenty of sub-plots, unrequited love, and secret liaisons. I enjoyed it. Who wouldn't want Robbie kissing their neck?
Yes, I read all three in the trilogy, but over and over I thought how much different from other historical romance novels I have read. The heroine wasn't as pure and innocent as the author started us to believe. I don't need protection from these ideas, I just wasn't expecting them. And then the death of Ruth was very brutal. That deserves to be under a far different category of book. Sorry to be negative, but I was disappointed. Even the fight at the end was a short, lack luster finish for such a long wait.
She is a much better writer then some. She need to be a little more factual about the times she writes about. Where she is not historically correct of just doesn't know, she skates over. Would like her to research her story more and she would excel in her writing. Good story! Just a little vague about the historical time she writes about.
I have read all three books in this trilogy now. At the end of The Laird Returns I couldn't stop crying. I have a very full life, but try to find time to relax and read sometimes at night, and I am so sad that this trilogy is over. What a beautiful story, and what a talented author. I cannot find one fault in any of her books. This is my first review, but I just felt compelled to write. I will be watching for any other book by this author.
This is the story of Jane and Robbie(Robert). Robbie is badly hurt in a clan war with an English lord. Robbie is hidden in a hut and nursed by Jane. They fall in love. Jane was the daughter of the laird of Dunloch Castle that was taken over by the English lord and she was forced to wed him. This is a pretty indepth story. The realization is wonderful, you can see everything happening in your mind just like you were there. There are some very graphic scenes, with a lot of cruelty by the English lord. Veronica Bale did a lot of research and tells it as it was centuries ago. I recommend this story.
