Louis Tracy (1863 - 1928) was a British journalist, and prolific writer of fiction. He used the pseudonyms Gordon Holmes and Robert Fraser, which were at times shared with M. P. Shiel, a collaborator from the start of the twentieth century. He was born in Liverpool to a well-to-do middle-class family. At first he was educated at home and then at the French Seminary at Douai. Around 1884 he became a reporter for a local paper - 'The Northern Echo' at Darlington, circulating in parts of Durham and North Yorkshire]; later he worked for papers in Cardiff and Allahabad. During 1892-1894 he was closely associated with Arthur Harmsworth, in 'The Sun' and 'The Evening News and Post'.

An old-fashioned romance with a bit of a travel guide feel to it. Some of the terminology is outdated. Reading it on the Kindle really helped since I could look most of the antiquated vocabulary up. Set in 1910, a British Viscount ends up filling in a chauffer on a whim. Predictably, he falls for the rich American he's driving all over the English countryside. Can she learn to love him in return even though he's a "servant?" Can she avoid the arranged marriage plot being hatched by her chaperone and a French Comte who is out of money? Yeah, you probably know the answer, but it is a fun read anyway.

This is really basically a story. If you like lots of history & descriptions of places then this is the book for you. It's a long story, or seemed so to me, even though I skipped most of all the history & descriptions (there's just too much of it). This is not a "who done it" type of mystery as you, the reader, know what's going on - you are just reading how Cynthia is baffled. Cynthia is a rich American's daughter who tours England in a car. Very, very, few swear words (i.e. uses d _ _ n it) & no sex, so a clean book.
This is a romance set in the early 1900s. Earl's son fills in as chauffeur for American heiress and her "chaperone" on a motor tour of southern England, as a lark after their original driver's car is wrecked; he quickly discovers the "chaperone" is scheming to push the heiress into a marriage with a dastardly fortune-hunter and decides to throw a wrench in the works. Hero and heroine go around discussing history and poetry as they see the sights. It's all good fun, if somewhat predictable -- the only real suspense is how long it's going to take the heroine to figure out that the hero isn't quite what he pretends to be.
This is an enjoyable, light story from the days of books that made you happy to read. Not overly predictable.
I love Louis Tracy; he's the one who really turned me to early 20th century authors. Most of the books of his that I've read are mysteries but this one is different; the focus is on a rather madcap adventure that two aristocrats take (one disguised as a chauffeur) with great descriptions of the English countryside and villages (you really get a sense of history and what England was like almost 100 years ago), in a fast, very modern motorcar. There are many twists and turns incorporating a rather villaneous couple of men, a scheming 'chaperone' and various and sundry village folks. I highly recommended this to my 90 year old mother, and she loved it too. Give it a try!
Louis Tracy is becoming one of my favorite author's. He had such a gift in creating great stories with good characterizations. If he writes about a villain you want to hiss. This was a fun adventure/romance with fully developed characters, some of whom had high integrity and others who created enough stress to keep you at the edge of your seat. A very entertaining read.
A rich American girl, Cynthia, is touring the UK acompanied by a chaperon. Because of a weird turn of circumstances the chauffeur is the rich, young Viscount Medenham, posing as a simple chauffeur. The Lord falls in love with Cynthia, but before he can hold her in his arms, he first has to win her love even though Cynthia believes he is just a chauffeur, and deal with a French Comte who wants to marry Cynthia, the scheming chaperon, and relatives of both himself and Cynthia who oppose their union.

This book is a charming little romance with a bit of mystery in it, and it is worth reading for anyone who loves a sweet romance story. This romance was first published in 1910, the printed edition has 249 pages.
